Sutan Nasomal and Kamidi Ask: When Will Gedung Juang 45 Be Restored?
Jakarta – International Law Expert Prof. Dr. KH. Sutan Nasomal, S.H., M.H., together with journalist and social activist Kamidi, CFLE, has questioned the government’s commitment to preserving Gedung Juang 45 Menteng in Central Jakarta. They firmly asked, “When will Gedung Juang 45 be restored?”, emphasizing that the historic building requires renovation and revitalization so it can once again serve as a center for historical education and national heritage.
Prof. Sutan Nasomal made the statement while responding to questions from editors-in-chief of print and online media from Indonesia and abroad at the Headquarters of the Merdeka Opposition Party in Jakarta on Saturday (July 25, 2026) via a mobile phone interview.
He expressed hope that President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, would give serious attention to preserving Indonesia’s historical buildings, particularly Gedung Juang 45 Menteng. According to him, the Ministry of Public Works, in cooperation with the Jakarta Provincial Government, should immediately undertake renovation, maintenance, and revitalization efforts so that the building can once again function as a center for historical learning and the promotion of national values.
“I hope President Haji Prabowo Subianto will instruct the relevant government institutions, particularly the Ministry of Public Works, to restore, renovate, and preserve Indonesia’s historical buildings, including Gedung Juang 45 Menteng,” Prof. Sutan Nasomal said.
He added that, ahead of the 81st Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence on August 17, 2026, historical buildings should become focal points for patriotic activities, historical education, and the cultivation of nationalism among younger generations.
Prof. Sutan Nasomal noted that the current condition of Gedung Juang 45 Menteng requires urgent attention, citing visible structural deterioration and inadequate lighting. He emphasized that preserving historical buildings is an essential part of safeguarding the nation’s identity.
“The world may leave the past behind, but the past is the walking stick that guides us toward the future. History is the record of a nation’s identity,” he stated.
He also called upon all elements of society to work together with the government to protect and preserve Indonesia’s historical heritage as a tribute to the heroes who fought for the country’s independence.
Meanwhile, Haji Erin, one of the administrators of the Gedung Juang 45 preservation community, stressed that renovation and maintenance are crucial given the building’s historical significance.
“Gedung Juang 45 Menteng holds tremendous historical value. Therefore, it deserves proper maintenance and restoration so that it remains a well-preserved national heritage,” he said.
Sharing the same view, Kamidi, CFLE, journalist and social activist, emphasized that Indonesia’s historical sites and cultural heritage must be protected, maintained, and preserved as a form of respect for the nation’s heroes.
According to Kamidi, historical buildings and sites are not only cultural assets but also valuable educational resources that help instill patriotism and national pride among younger generations.
“Indonesia’s historical heritage must continue to be preserved as a tribute to our national heroes. These historical sites should be widely introduced to young people and incorporated into school education so they can understand, appreciate, and honor the sacrifices made in securing Indonesia’s independence,” Kamidi said.
He added that preserving historical sites is a long-term investment in building a generation with integrity, strong national awareness, and deep respect for Indonesia’s historical legacy.
In his closing remarks, Prof. Dr. KH. Sutan Nasomal expressed hope that the President of Indonesia, together with the Jakarta Provincial Government, would take concrete steps to renovate and revitalize Gedung Juang 45 Menteng, enabling it to once again serve as a center for historical education, cultural preservation, and the promotion of nationalism for the Indonesian people.
